I went to bed at seven in the morning last night. Woke up at noon-thirty, bummed around for a bit, then went back to bed at five. Woke up at eight. Consequently, although it’s now 3:30 in the morning, I feel like it’s about eight at night. And because we replaced most of our lighting here in the suite with blacklights… well, it just adds to the effect. I remember when 3:30 used to be late. I used to be tired at this hour of the morning. I used to go to bed at regular hours, and I used to be awake during most of the day. This year of college has ruined all sense of time linearity in my life. Instead of days being discrete pieces of memory broken by rhythmic periods of restful slumber, the weeks slew and blur together. I can hardly delineate the hours of waking and sleeping. This is partly because, while I only get slightly less sleep than before, it is broken up a great deal more now.

Anyway, so my roommate came home about an hour ago with a bunch of groceries. Not like, groceries groceries, but a bunch of frozen, canned, and boxed food. A lot of food. Then he tells me that there’s like three times that much in his car still and he needs help carrying it all in. I’m thinking to myself, “Dear God man! What happened? Is there even any food left at the store?” Turns out he was shopping with his mom and she decided that he was probably going to starve to death unless she bought one hundred and twenty-three dollars worth of food for him. To some of you this may seem like a trivial amount of money, but to those currently in the throes of college poverty, you will fully comprehend the immensity of this dollar amount. You will further comprehend the sheer quantity of food this affords, knowing that instead of buying quality we go for quantity, in the form of Ramen and associated goods.

Hundred and twenty three bucks is about how much I would make in tips if I worked four nights.

We are on a meal plan. But this weekend was fall break so the cafeteria was closed. I was lying on the floor starving to death when he came in with that life-giving quantity of food.

And, Steve, you’re just too rich for your own good.
