While I was working on my Minix project today, I discovered that Linux (or at least my version of Linux) doesn’t have support for the v3 filesystem, only the v2. Fortunately somebody made a patch, so I downloaded it and applied it. The instructions on that website are then very clear: “Recompile your kernel”.
This is possibly the most daunting and horrible task I have ever undertaken. I cannot believe the sheer complexity and mind-numbing difficulty of this task. I also cannot believe the lack of documentation and HOWTOs on this topic. With all the “progress” that Linux has made recently, it is astonishing that this is so incredibly arcane.
Let me stress that recompiling the kernel to update a filesystem is like tearing apart your entire car down to the bare metal, engine and all, and then reassembling it. Just to change your light bulbs. I’m shocked. I’m surprised. I’m angry. I’m waiting on this huge process to complete, so that hopefully it works, so that hopefully I can mount this filesystem, so that hopefully I can get on with my work. More than two hours later.
On a lighter topic, the results from last time’s Acromania game are in. The acronym for next time is IPOD. I will give you a hint: Recursive acronyms rock.

Recompiling is a horrid task. I tried it once and failed utterly. I had to have my genius friend do it for me. However, I was using Mandrake at the time, which had a decent enough GUI-ish program that made recompiling a little easier. How is it done in Minix?

RESULTS
I liked Kathlyn’s, Dwight’s, and eL’s. Unfortunately Dwight, while IPOD is a potentially ominous denotation, for your acronym to work it would actually have to be IIPOD. Unless you don’t count the “is” as a letter? But you capitalized it, so I think it does. Maybe we should make up some rules on what short words you can count as not taking up letters in the acronym. Kathlyn’s is spot on perfect, including recursion and painful, absolute truth about the market for iPods. She wins! However, because I enjoyed the truth of eL’s entry as well, I am awarding him an additional quarter bonus point. Good entries this time, everyone. You’re all getting really good at this!

Damn. Why didn’t this come up in my news reader until today?
