Every so often, something comes along that simply boggles my mind. I would say this happens every three to five months.
I am sure you are all familiar with the LOLCATS meme that has been gaining steam for the past… what, like three years. Over the past several months it has begun to reach critical mass. I would like to say that it has culminated with man’s golden achievement: LOLCODE. Here you have a meme that is so powerful that it has evolved into a community-driven specification for a language with support for file I/O and an event-driven model. The community behind this particular section of the meme is so robust that it has created well over a dozen implementations of the language and plugins for almost every important editor (sans Eclipse, but I’m sure that’s in the works).
People have contributed loads of spare time to this thing. And unlike regular open source software, where that spare time investment creates value, there is no discernible value created from LOLCODE. However, that doesn’t stop it from being the most amazing thing I’ve seen in recent memory.

that site made me whimper a low whimper, beginning from the deepest part of my belly and continuing to a sad sort of groan near the throat, and finally tapering off near the larynx with a soft, pitiful exhalation of hopelessness.
